Meet Kalia Antoniou
Kalia Antoniou is an Olympic swimmer representing Cyprus, born in Limassol in 2000. From an early age, she distinguished herself as one of the island’s most promising athletes, combining athletic achievement with academic excellence. A graduate of the University of Alabama (USA), current graduate student at the University of Nicosia, and member of the Cyprus Olympic Team, Kalia competes in freestyle, backstroke and butterfly disciplines. Her journey is a story of persistence, international recognition and national pride.
Kalia Antoniou’s Career Highlights
- 2024 Paris Olympic Games: Represented Cyprus in the Women’s 100m Freestyle, finishing 18th overall, marking the best Olympic performance by a Cypriot swimmer to date.
- 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games: Competed in the Women’s 50m and 100m Freestyle events, representing Cyprus on the world stage.
- 2025 Games of the Small States of Europe (Andorra): Directed the competition, securing four gold medals in the 50m Freestyle, Backstroke, Butterfly and 100m Freestyle, as well as a silver medal in the 4×100m Freestyle Relay.
- 2025 Summer World University Games (Berlin): Reached the final of the 100m Freestyle, finishing 6th with a time of 54.83 seconds. Also reached the final in the 50 Freestyle and 50 butterfly
- 2024 European Aquatics Championships: Recorded great performances in the 50m and 100m Freestyle events with times of 24.99s (5th) and 54.23s (4th) respectively.
- 2021 World University Games (Chengdu): Earned two bronze medals in the 50m and 100m Freestyle events.
- 2019 World Aquatics Championships (South Korea): Competed in both the 50m and 100m Freestyle, representing Cyprus among the world’s elite swimmers.
- 2017 World Aquatics Championships (Budapest): Made her early international debut in the 50m Freestyle and 50m Backstroke events.
- National Achievements: Continues to hold and break multiple Cypriot national records, including a 2025 record-breaking performance in the 50m Butterfly (26.96 seconds), a record that had stood for 16 years.
- 2024 World Aquatics Championships (Qatar): Semi-finalist 50 and 100 freestyle
- 2022 World Aquatics Championships (Hungary): Semi-finalist 50m and 100m freestyle. 10th in the world in 50m freestyle
Her consistent record of success led to her recognition as Cyprus’ Female Athlete of the Year 2022 by the Cyprus Sports Writers Association.
