Cyprus Introduces Online Renewal of Residence Permits for Third-Country Nationals
A Significant Step Towards the Digitalisation of Cyprus Immigration Procedures
As part of the Republic of Cyprus’ continuing digital transformation, a new electronic service for the renewal of residence permits for third-country nationals was launched on 6 July 2026.
The introduction of the online platform represents an important development in the administration of immigration matters in Cyprus. It is intended to simplify the renewal procedure, reduce the administrative burden associated with physical submissions and provide applicants, employers and professional representatives with a more efficient means of managing residence permit renewals.
For third-country nationals residing and working in Cyprus, as well as for employers and professional advisers handling immigration matters on their behalf, the new procedure introduces several practical changes that should be considered before the next residence permit renewal.
Who May Submit a Renewal Application?
Under the new electronic procedure, an application for renewal may be submitted by:
- the residence permit holder;
- the employer, where applicable; or
- an authorised representative, including a law firm or accounting firm.
Importantly, at this stage the electronic service applies only to renewal applications. First-time applications for residence permits are not currently covered by the new online procedure and remain subject to the applicable existing process.
Which Residence Permit Categories Are Covered?
The electronic service is currently available for the renewal of the following categories:
- Temporary residence permits for the purpose of Remunerated Employment;
- Temporary residence permits for the purpose of Domestic Employment;
- Temporary residence permits for employees of Companies of Foreign Interests;
- Temporary residence permits for Family Reunification, including eligible family members of Long-Term Residents and employees of Companies of Foreign Interests; and
- Residence permits for Long-Term Residents.
The scope of the electronic system may be expanded in the future as the Republic of Cyprus continues the digitalisation of its immigration and public administration services.
What Can Be Done Through the Electronic Platform?
The new platform allows applicants and their authorised representatives to manage substantial parts of the renewal procedure electronically.
In particular, users may:
- complete and submit residence permit renewal applications online;
- upload the required supporting documents electronically;
- submit and manage the relevant authorisation where an application is handled by a representative;
- receive updates regarding the progress and status of an application;
- pay the applicable government fees electronically following review of the application; and
- select the appropriate service point for the biometric appointment and subsequent collection of the renewed residence permit.
The introduction of electronic filing should therefore reduce the need for applicants and representatives to attend government offices for administrative stages of the renewal procedure.
Personal Attendance and Biometric Data Remain Required
The digitalisation of the application process does not eliminate all requirements for personal attendance.
Where required under the applicable immigration legislation, applicants must still attend the relevant service point in person for the collection of biometric data, including fingerprints, photograph and signature.
Applicants should therefore distinguish between the electronic submission of the renewal application and the subsequent biometric and permit-collection requirements, which may continue to require physical attendance.
Verified CY Login Account Required
Access to the electronic residence permit renewal service requires a verified CY Login account.
Third-country nationals, employers and authorised professional representatives intending to use the platform should therefore ensure that the necessary CY Login registration and verification procedures have been completed in advance.
From a practical perspective, this is an important preparatory step. Applicants approaching the expiry date of their residence permit should avoid leaving the creation or verification of their CY Login account until the final stages of the renewal process.
Practical Considerations for Applicants and Employers
Although electronic submission is expected to make residence permit renewals more accessible, the substantive immigration requirements applicable to each permit category continue to be relevant.
Before submitting a renewal application, applicants and employers should ensure that the appropriate residence category has been selected, that all supporting documentation is complete and up to date, and that any necessary authorisation for a professional representative has been properly arranged.
Particular attention should also be given to the expiry date of the existing residence permit. The availability of an online application procedure should not be treated as a reason to postpone preparations for renewal. Supporting documentation and other requirements should be addressed sufficiently in advance to minimise the risk of delays or complications.
A Further Step in the Modernisation of Cyprus Immigration Administration
The launch of the electronic renewal platform is a welcome development in the modernisation of Cyprus’ immigration framework and public administration.
By allowing residence permit renewal applications and supporting documents to be submitted electronically, providing digital status updates and facilitating electronic payment of government fees, the new system has the potential to make the renewal process more efficient for third-country nationals, employers and professional representatives.
At the same time, applicants should bear in mind that digitalisation changes the method of submission, but does not remove the underlying legal and documentary requirements applicable to the relevant residence permit category.
Applicants and employers should therefore continue to assess each renewal carefully and ensure compliance with the applicable Cyprus immigration requirements.
